A bipartisan group of US lawmakers plan to introduce legislation 03APR that would ban people fined or convicted of serious physical violence from commercial flights. The lawmakers say the legislation is needed to protect passengers and airline staff and to minimize disruptions in air travel.
The bill would direct the TSA to create and manage a no-fly list for unruly passengers, determine guidelines for appeal and removal from the list, and determine how long passengers should remain on the list. The bill is supported by executives at Southwest Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and American Airlines.
As commercial air travel returned following the pandemic, there was a significant increase in incidents aboard planes, especially relating to masking rules. According to the FAA, passenger disruptions have now returned to pre-COVID levels.
Not everyone is in favour of the proposed law. The American Civil Liberties Union opposed the creation of a no-fly list for disruptive passengers last year, saying there have been too many challenges with the no-fly list meant for suspected terrorists regarding civil liberties.
