Not Just in Canada: Soaring Airline Customer Complaints Push Global Legislators to Act

Airline complaints have neared record levels over the last year around the world, prompting calls for stronger enforcement of existing rules and new legislation to protect consumers, reports Market Screener.

Pressure is mounting ahead of the busy summer travel season, and airlines fear the increased regulations for payouts could further pressure airfares, which already face rising costs. Airlines are also concerned about conflicting rules and want other industry stakeholders to share compensation costs.

The U.S. government is drafting new passenger protection rules and the European Union is pushing for stricter enforcement. As Open Jaw has reported, the federal government recently tabled increasingly strict new legislation cracking down on airlines and boosting pax rights.
