Airlines Press U.S. On Refusal to Lift COVID-19 Travel Restrictions

Major airlines are pressing the U.S. government on its decision to not accelerate the relaxation of COVID-19 travel restrictions, despite countries in the EU slowly beginning to reopen. The U.S. has restricted nearly all non-U.S. citizens from the UK from entering the country, but airline and administration officials are hopeful restrictions can be removed by 04JUL. American Airlines President Robert Isom said that the airline will take air travel “whenever it comes” despite the fact that it may be too late for summer travel. Before, airline officials had held out hope that the U.S. would ease travel restrictions from the UK and Ireland by late MAY. "We certainly understand the desire of many Europeans to come to travel to the United States and vice versa," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said 21MAY. "We can't respond to public pressure or even emotion. We have to rely on the guidance of our health and medical experts."
