It was a chaotic weekend for European travellers after 2,911 flight delays and 83 cancellations hit European hubs including London, Amsterdam and Paris on Sunday.
The biggest hit was for easyJet, which had 557 delays and 56 cancellations on Sunday, followed by Air France, Ryanair and British Airways. Amsterdam's Schiphol airport recorded 299 delays and five cancellations yesterday with a sharp increase today.
At time of publication Flightaware shows 460 delays at Schiphol and 33 cancellations on Monday, with KLM bearing the brunt with 244 delays and 25 cancellations. Charles de Gaulle clocks in with 211 delays and 12 cancellations.
Other European hubs like such as London Gatwick, Barcelona, Manchester and Edinburgh continue to be affected as airlines play catch up.
Cascading delays such as these are primarily due to air traffic management restrictions, crew scheduling limitations and aircraft availability, says Eurocontrol. When an early short-haul flight is delayed or cancelled, it can push the whole schedule back and reverberate for several days.
