Your kid is not 'a piece of luggage': Biden calls out airline fees in State of the Union

In his State of the Union speech before Congress this week, U.S. President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to one of his pro-consumer policy initiatives that involves travel: cracking down on what his administration has called in recent months “junk” and “unfair” fees imposed by airlines and hotels.

As USA Today reports, the DoT has proposed a new rule to require airlines to display the total price of an air ticket upfront, including baggage and other fees. In addition, the administration has been targeting “hidden resort fees.”

However, as Open Jaw has reported, while Biden’s condemnation of unfair fees for travellers may have wide consumer support, agency action has been slight. By including the issue in his SoU speech, Biden may now be hoping Congress will take up the cause, an unlikely outcome, as experts have observed, with the change in political climate in DC.
