NBC News reports that Disney created a new rule stating that any changes made to its special district in Orlando be beneficial to Walt Disney World. The declaration came just weeks before Florida was set to take over the special district, with a board selected by Governor Ron DeSantis in a feud over the status of the district, which had seen Disney granted unique powers to plan and operate its property with little government oversight.
The issue came to a head in 2022 as Disney faced public pressure to oppose a new DeSantis law banning the teaching of gender and sexual orientation to young students.
Disney’s new, pre-emptive special district declaration states that it is enforceable "in perpetuity.” The governor-appointed new Chairperson of the new board governing the oversight district said the state will challenge the declaration in court.
