The travel week is off to a messy start in many parts of the U.S. And tomorrow could be worse.
More than 100 flights have been cancelled out of BOS, LGA, JFK and EWR for 20JAN after several inches of snow fell on 19JAN. The temperature in New York City is expected to drop to -14 Celsius (7 Fahrenheit) overnight, with wind chills making it feel much colder. In Boston, the thermometer is expected to drop to -15C overnight, or 5 Fahrenheit.
Published reports said that on 19JAN, arriving flights at JFK were delayed up to two and a half hours, with 162 flights cancelled and nearly 500 more delayed. It was also bad at LGA, where there were delays of up to an hour and a half, with 262 flights cancelled and 271 delayed. At EWR, Flight Aware reported 260 flights were cancelled and 293 were delayed on 19JAN.
FlightAware was reporting 111 flight cancellations out of BOS, LGA, JFK and EWR as of 10 a.m. ET on 20JAN. It listed 84 cancelled departures and 37 cancelled arrivals for IAH, as well as 27 cancellations out of HOU.
With an unusual dose of wintry weather headed to South Texas, Houston Airports issued a safety alert to say IAH, HOU and Ellington Airport/Houston Spaceport (EFD) will be closed as of midnight 21JAN.
The suspension will last during the forecasted winter storm due to “extremely hazardous road conditions throughout Houston,” Houston Airports said in an alert posted on its website.
