Hollywood has been thrown into chaos as wildfires rip across Los Angeles County, overwhelming local fire departments and forcing the closure of tourist attractions.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, four major wildfires, including one in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, remain uncontained as of Wednesday {08JAN) evening.
Fast-moving flames have prompted the closure of landmarks such as the Hollywood Sign, the Griffith Observatory, and the Los Angeles Zoo, Skift reports.
Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal CityWalk closed Wednesday but announced plans to reopen Thursday, pending further assessments. Disney’s theme park in nearby Anaheim has not reported any closures due to the fires.
Travel and Airline Updates
As of Wednesday afternoon, LAX had nine cancellations and 74 delays. Airlines are issuing fee waivers. American, Delta and United are waiving change fees for travel to southern California until 15JAN.
Vancouver Sun reports all YVR to LAX flights departed on Wednesday, and there are no cancellations for Thursday (09JAN).
Paul Michna, a spokesperson for YVR, said while there is no impact on flights scheduled from YVR to the L.A. area, that could change, and pax are reminded to confirm their flight status and schedules.
Several travel companies have stepped up to aid displaced residents, offering free temporary housing to those impacted by the crisis.
According to Los Angeles Tourism, the wildfires pose a significant threat to LA’s tourism industry, which generated USD$40 billion in revenue in 2023. The closures of major attractions could result in a substantial economic hit, especially if the fires persist or expand.
