The UK Government is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for visitors, including Canadians and Americans, who don’t currently need a visa for short stays.
This new system is part of efforts to improve border security and prevent misuse of the UK immigration system. Canadians, U.S. residents and other non-Europeans can apply for an ETA starting 27NOV, 2024 and will need it to travel to the UK from 08JAN, 2025.
The ETA costs £10 (close to CAD $18) and allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time. It will be valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
Everyone, including babies and children, will need an ETA and you can apply for others as well. The ETA will be required for all visits including just transiting through the UK.
The easiest way to apply is through the UK ETA app. Most applications will be processed within three working days, but sometimes it may take a little longer.
In a story posted at biometricupdate.com, it’ s stated that the travel industry has been worried that the scheme may come at the same time as the EU Entry-Exit System (EES), “creating even more confusion and chaos.”
Some UK officials are said to be worried that confusion around the UK and EU travel authorization policies will cause Ireland visitors, who will use the EU ETA, to skip visits to Northern Ireland, which will use the UK version.
“Another impact may be on UK airports, which could receive fewer transit passengers. Heathrow reported a decline of 90,000 passengers on Middle Eastern routes in August,” biometricupdate.com reported.
VisitBritain CEO Patricia Yates said she’s been encouraged to see the smooth roll-out to date of the ETA scheme across the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, with the digital application process quick and light touch to complete.
“We’re working closely with the UK Government’s Home Office to ensure the ETA’s wider international rollout is well communicated and with partners across our overseas markets, so that visitors have the clarity they need to plan and book their visits with confidence,” she said in a note to Open Jaw.
Visit Britain says it’s forecasting 38.7 million visits to the UK this year, up 2% from 2023. Visitor spending is expected to rise 5% over last year.
