AGAINST THE WIND

1,000+ Flights Cancelled by Deadly Japan Typhoon

A powerful typhoon in southern Japan has killed at least three people and is wreaking havoc on travel plans.

Typhoon Shanshan hit the southern island of Kyushu on 28AUG with winds of up to 252 kilometres per hour and as much as 600 mm of rain.

FlightAware.com reports more than 1,000 flights have been cancelled in and out of Japan, including nearly 350 flights in and out of Tokyo Haneda and nearly 300 out of Fukuoka.

It also reports 244 cancelled Japan Airlines flights and 108 from All Nippon Airways.

Some high-speed train services have also been suspended, and reports say roughly 250,000 Kyushu homes are without power.

Almost four million people were told to evacuate as Japanese authorities warned that a “life-threatening situation” was imminent for towns in Kyushu’s Oita prefecture.

Toyota suspended operations in all of its domestic plants due to the storm, while Nissan, Honda, chipmakers Renesas and Tokyo Electron also temporarily halted production at some factories, the CBC said.
