Starting tomorrow, 08JAN, visitors to the UK, including Canadians and Americans who previously didn’t need a visa for short stays, will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
This new system applies to travellers from non-European countries. It aims to improve border security and prevent misuse of the immigration system.
As previously reported, details about the ETA are as follows:
- Cost: £10 (approximately CAD $18).
- Validity: Allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time and is valid for two years or until the passport expires.
- Who Needs It: Travellers from the U.S., Canada and Australia.
- Applicability: Required for all visits, including transit through the UK.
Is it a Visa?
No, the ETA is not a visa; it’s a visa waiver. Travellers who are citizens of countries that already require a visa to enter the UK will still need to apply for a visa. However, they do not need to get an ETA in addition to their visa.
The introduction of the ETA aligns with global trends in immigration reciprocity. When the United States launched its ESTA visa waiver program in 2009, it set the stage for other countries, including the UK, to implement similar systems for their borders.
The UK ETA app provides the easiest way to apply. Most applications are processed within three working days, but it’s recommended to apply as early as possible in case of delays. According to CTV News, travellers need to upload a passport photo, scan their faces, answer questions about their plans, and complete the application in one sitting. The process takes about 20 minutes.
Encouraging Progress
VisitBritain CEO Patricia Yates said she’s been encouraged by the smooth roll-out of the ETA scheme across the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The digital application process is quick and easy to complete.
“We’re working closely with the UK Government’s Home Office to ensure the ETA’s wider international rollout is well communicated and with partners across our overseas markets, so that visitors have the clarity they need to plan and book their visits with confidence,” she said in a note to Open Jaw.
Visit Britain says it’s forecasting 38.7 million visits to the UK this year, up 2% from 2023. Visitor spending is expected to rise 5% over last year.
