Canada's busiest airport and the Canada Border Services Agency are collaborating on a test of new technology designed to get arriving air pax through the customs and border process "easier and faster."
The test is already underway in T1, so travellers arriving at YYZ will immediately get a chance to use the new electronic, or 'eGates.'
Arrivals aged 16 and up can use the new eGates to verify their identity documents and submit customs declarations.
Pearson and the CBSA both put the word out on social media.
“If you’re arriving in Canada through Terminal 1, look for new eGates being tested,” YYZ tweeted.
“Once in full operation, these eGates will help make it easier and faster to pass through customs," Pearson airport's tweet added to the CBSA's own post promising eGates will "will deliver a smoother and faster border experience!"
No word when 'full operations' of eGates will be implemented at the airport, which has been plagued by long lineups of pax attempting to enter Canada, with reports of planes being held on the tarmac to manage congestion inside the terminals.
The Pearson/ CBSA test of new eGates comes as Ottawa has introduced changes to the ArriveCAN app, to help speed frequent travellers and any arrivals to YYZ and YVR through the customs and border process.
