Westjet released a statement yesterday saying that the carrier and Ottawa have agreed to end talks about taxpayer-funded pandemic support for the airline.
The statement notes it was a mutual decision, and one taken as a result of Canadians’ increasing vaccination rates, with the implication that will also bring a resumption of travel. Instead of pursuing government financial support, the company says it will shift to “to leading the safe restart of the travel and tourism sector.”
The statement came a day after Canada announced it will be opening its borders to fully vaccinated Americans in AUG and to vaccinated international travellers in SEP.
WestJet does not rule out requesting financial support in the future, and says the government remains open to resuming such talks in future.
