Air Canada Vacations in Tulum: What We Saw, What We Learned – What Surprised Us

ACV’s “newest” destination features a delightful array of EP and all-inclusive properties

A fam is always a wonderful opportunity to connect with suppliers, network with peers and rachet up product knowledge. And the recent Air Canada Vacations fam to its newest destination of Tulum (TQO) proved all of that – and more.

The 26 agents had a busy few days inspecting 19 properties (and enjoying a few hours R&R too). As well as in depth training on Air Canada Vacations, we learned a great deal about this new non-stop destination which is in a very historic corner Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

New Tulum Airport incorporates Mexican design

The sparkling new TQO airport, 120 km south of CUN, is not only less crowded, but it can shave time off airport transfers as pax land closer to their Tulum resort.

» Good to know: The hotels in the Tulum program are also available with flights into CUN. But as Air Canada Vacations is actively promoting TQO as a new destination, packages there may be priced more attractively. Always be sure to compare pricing with CUN packages. TQO is offered Fri and Sun from YYZ and Sat from YUL. The flights, which are offered year-round, are on Rouge.

Caezar Flores, Carol D’Avolio and Dan Colangelo, newly-minted ACV Tulum Destination Specialists

So: what did the agents make of all those hotels? It’s clear that Dreams is a winner with agents including Caezar Flores of Durham Travel in Courtice and Karri Waterfield of Expedia Cruises in Orangeville who both loved layout, the size (“just right”) and the beach. The all-inclusive Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya with its impressive kids’ oceanfront waterpark – set a good distance from the main property – was a personal fave of Sandra Van Dong of Winds, Waves and Wands Travel in Kitchener.

The Catalonia Riviera Maya has a lovely family-friendly vibe on a small, pretty stretch of beach, and enjoys a huge repeat clientele. (The day after our visit, a British group were due to arrive for their 39th stay.) Specializing in excellent value for money, it’s located within a gated community perfect for the security-conscious traveller, and is an ACV bestseller.

Uber luxe: the swim-out accommodation at Unico 20º 87º

The upscale, Euro-chic and refined 5-Diamond UNICO 20º 87º was a hit with many including Dan Colangelo of Kemp Travel in Durham who felt it would be perfect for clients who want only the best.

The Family Selection check-in area at Grand Palladium Kantenah features an eye-catching candy ferris wheel

And while the 300 acre Palladium with over 1500 rooms in 5 distinct properties can be almost overwhelming, it’s clear they know their market. There are romantic over-water bungalows set on a lagoon ideal for the smoochiest clients, while the kids’ program at the Family Selection hotel-within-a-hotel at Kantenah is unequalled to anything I’ve seen. As exemplified by its dedicated, air-conditioned check-in area which features Gerber baby food for the tinies, an equipped play area for wee ones and X-box for older ones.

Not surprisingly, the Bahia Principe Akumal properties are also solid sellers with Air Canada Vacations and are “stay at one, play at as many as 4” properties which visitors love so much. (The Brazilian resto is perfect for the dedicated carnivore, I was told.)

The stunning lobby at the Bahia Principe

The agents were also very impressed by the range of EP hotels, ideal for the independent client who wants to get out and explore the many famous attractions of the region including the ancient Mayan ruins at Tulum and waterparks at Xel-Há (“shell-ha”) and Xcaret (“ish-caret”). Many of the EP properties are within walking distance of the funky town of Tulum with its bohemian, barefoot vibe. Many AI and EP properties provide bicycles perfect for self-propelled touring.

EP properties include the very chill MOTTO by Hilton, with its rooftop loungers, pool and gym. The 38 room Siente is a low-key, few-frills property with great views from the open-air rooftop resto – ideal for younger or budget-conscious clients. I personally really enjoyed the Kimpton Aluna with its aura of restful elegance.

Glamping at Nômade: very African safari vibe

And for the dedicated wellness enthusiast interested in self-discovery and the Mayan culture, check out the Nômade which has glamping and treehouse accommodation options in a beachfront jungle setting. Carol D’Avolio of Inclusive Travel in Vaughan said it really inspired her with its connection to nature. Definitely not run of the mill!
