A keel-laying ceremony in Dubai for the Captain Arctic, a polar expedition vessel purpose-built for French owner Selar, is expected to usher a new era in environmentally conscious cruising.

The Captain Arctic sets itself apart as the first luxury expedition ship designed to operate primarily on renewable energy. The 70-meter-long vessel will utilize wind sails equipped with solar panels, allowing it to derive 90% of its power from renewable sources, claiming to slash carbon emissions by 90% compared to traditional ships.

“The vessel resonates and aligns with our vision and commitment for a sustainable future and providing green solutions within the maritime and other industries. Building this hull is also a first for the UAE and it aligns with the government’s vision for a sustainable future. ”

Captain Arctic aims to demonstrate how green technologies can meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world while protecting its most vulnerable environments.

Selar CEO Sophie Galvagnon, who was also present at the keel-laying ceremony, said, “This vessel is not only an investment in sustainable tourism but also a commitment to preserving the natural wonders of our planet.”
