More than 400 flights were grounded at DFW on 14MAR, and the weather problems may hit busy East Coast airports in the U.S. on the weekend.
As of 9 a.m. ET on 14MAR, flightaware.com was reporting 420 cancellations at DFW, as well as cancelled flights at smaller airports such as Amarillo and Little Rock, Arkansas.
FoxNews said an outbreak of severe storms is likely in the afternoon on 14MAR and potentially into the overnight hours as a powerful storm system intensifies across the central U.S. Significant tornadoes could form in the Southern U.S. on into 15MAR.
“The highest risk for tornadoes is over 750 miles from Davenport, Iowa, to Jackson, Mississippi. The overall tornado threat is over 1,000 miles long. The states with the most concern look to be centered in the mid-Mississippi Valley, including cities like St. Louis, Missouri; Memphis, Tennessee; Paducah, Kentucky; and Little Rock, Arkansas,” Fox said. “Cities like New Orleans, Louisiana, and Birmingham, Alabama, are under a Level 4 out of 5 risk, indicating a high likelihood of supercell thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes and damaging winds.”
The bigger issue for air travel is likely to be on Sunday, 16MAR, when the storm is expected to slam into the East Coast.
“By Sunday storms are on the east coast impacting cities from New York to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, south to Jacksonville,” The Weather Channel reports.
The storms are largely expected to bypass Canada.
