It could soon be easier to travel through some Canadian airports.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has announced plans to gradually implement computed tomography (CT) technology with 3D imaging at security screening checkpoints in various airports across Canada over the next several years.

CATSA says the CT technology uses advanced 3D images to help screening officers better detect explosives and other threats.

This means permitted liquids (under 100 mL), medical devices, and large electronics can be left in carry-on luggage during screening for travellers.

"It's great to see this innovative use of technology in action. This will make security screening more effective and improve the passenger experience for Canadians and tourists in our airports across Canada," said Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport.

The first full installation of the new CT technology is at YVR's new ABC security checkpoint. In the fall of 2024, more airports will receive CT equipment, with installations continuing for several years.

CATSA said it's working with its screening contractors and air travel partners "to ensure effective security and excellent service" as CT technology is rolled out across the country.
