NAV CANADA Proposes Shorter, Streamlined Routes to YYZ

NAV CANADA has launched a public consultation in collaboration with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) to propose airspace enhancements for YYZ, including a modern arrival procedure which would see shorter, more streamlined routes for aircraft flying to the airport.

The proposed changes will introduce Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required (RNP AR) for two runway ends at YYZ. According to a release, RNP AR would provide the opportunity to design more direct routes which enable aircraft to turn towards the airport sooner, and support more efficient integration of air traffic.

This will be supported by a new International Civil Aviation Organization standard known as Established on RNP-AR (EoR), and if implemented, would make it the largest deployment of the EoR standard at a major international airport to date.

According to NAV CANADA, this proposal will support the airline industry’s sustainability efforts in regard to both noise and emissions by reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) and the overflight of residential areas. The company estimates that the deployment of RNP-AR will result in GHG avoidance of 178,000,000 kilograms over 10 years, which would be the equivalent to taking approximately 44,000 cars off the road permanently.
