As reported by Open Jaw on 24JUL, 2023, by law, all foreign tourists visiting the State of Quintana Roo, must pay the Obligatory Tourist tax, called VISITAX.
According to a statement issued on 10 JUL 2023 by Quintana Roo’s General Director of the Tax Administration Service, Héctor Josè Contreras Mercader:
“Enforcement of the payment is now law which means it is mandatory for travel providers and operators to abide by the ‘collect and inform’ order issued by the state.”
As per the enclosed Quintana Roo government letter which Open Jaw has obtained, the state appointed contractor, Urquitem SA de CV, is to carry out the collection of the VISITAX. Urquitem, in turn, has authorized Toronto based Travelkore Inc. as the “certified and authorized company to execute this action”.
The document clarifies any doubt as to the legitimacy of Travelkore’s role in collecting the tax as well as the legality of the tax itself.
