New research from Expedia shows travellers are booking more last minute trips compared to last year, based on search data from January through March 2026.
The research shows searches within a 7–13-day window of booking increased 25% year-on-year globally, with North America (+25%), Latin America (+30%), and Asia Pacific (+25%) reflecting the largest shifts.
The online travel agency reports the upcoming World Cup is behind an increase in shorter-notice travel to the tournament's host countries: the US and Canada had a 10% rise in searches, while Mexico saw a 15% increase.
Expedia cites the "more dynamic and less predictable booking environment in 2026" as being behind the trend, as travellers "respond to specific events, regional disruption and shifting confidence levels."
The report warns "geopolitical unrest in the Middle East" is posing challenges across the travel industry. Events in Mexico also briefly slowed search activity in February and March, which Expedia says is likely due to disruption at Guadalajara (GDL) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR) airports during that time.
In order to deal with the global uncertainty, travel agents are advised to be "ready to capture demand at shorter notice" and move quickly when clients decide to book.
“Travel planning is becoming more flexible, with many clients waiting longer to book and responding more directly to events, pricing and changing circumstances,” said Robin Lawther, VP of Expedia TAAP and Business Development.
“For travel agents, this creates a clear opportunity to add value in the moment... helping clients move quickly, navigate choice confidently and secure the right trip even on a shorter booking window,” he added.
