Mother Nature isn’t finished with the northeast US and Atlantic Canada.
A storm that dumped record snowfalls on several cities in the northeastern US on 23FEB is moving on, but one-half of flights out of New York City and Boston have been cancelled for 24 FEB. Atlantic Canada also is being hit hard by winter weather.
As of 9 a.m. Eastern Time, Flight Aware was showing 50% of outgoing flights for 24FEB were cancelled at BOS, with 48% at both LGA and EWR and 41% at JFK. All told, more than 1,000 flights are cancelled at those four airports.
Flight Aware said things were a bit rosier for incoming flights, with 38% of flights cancelled for EWR, 33% for LGA, 32% at BOS and 27% for JFK.
Air Canada has winter weather advisories out for 15 airports in the US northeast and Atlantic Canada, including YHZ, YYT, YSJ, JDF, BOS, JFK, PHL, LGA, DCA and IAD.
WestJet has advisories for 24FEB for Moncton and St. John’s, while Porter has issued advisories for Fredericton, St. John’s, Moncton, New York LaGuardi and Newark EWR.
The outlook for 25FEB is better with only a handful of cancelled flights at major airports in the US Northeast.
For Atlantic Canada, things could get nasty in the next day or two. Yahoo News reports the current weather system “will likely be one of the most impactful storms of the season for Nova Scotia, or the Maritimes as a whole.”
The “bomb cyclone” was associated with at least two deaths in the northeastern US. Providence, Rhode Island, was hit with a record 36 inches (91 cm’s) of snow, and significant snowfall was also reported in New York State and Massachusetts, making travel treacherous at best.
