Antigua and Barbuda Vies for Regional Hub Status after Record Year

The Ministry of Tourism and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) celebrated 2024 as an exceptional year for tourism during a ‘Year in Review’ Press Conference.

“Our growth in 2024 is a direct result of our efforts to strengthen connectivity, position Antigua and Barbuda as a regional hub with two international airports, expand our hotel and accommodation offerings, invest in human capital, and stay on top of our game,” said the Hon. Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation & Investment.

The Caribbean destination welcomed over 330,281 stay-over visitors and more than 823,955 cruise passengers, surpassing pre-pandemic records.

Airlift to the islands saw increased service from American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, and British Airways. The return of Condor and the introduction of Sunrise Airways further boosted accessibility. Frontier Airlines will launch its inaugural San Juan–Antigua service on 15FEB 2025.

Hotel occupancy rates exceeded 2019 levels.

The cruise industry also experienced growth, bolstered by increased homeporting operations led by the Antigua Cruise Port and the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority.

Looking Ahead

“2025 promises even more with the first quarter bringing increased cruise calls for Antigua and Barbuda and more airlift,” said the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority CEO, Colin C. James. He also announced the introduction of Antigua and Barbuda Culinary Month in May, including Antigua and Barbuda Restaurant Week, FAB Fest, Food Forum, and Eat Like A Local—initiatives aimed at establishing the country as a culinary hotspot in the Caribbean.

2025 includes the 300th anniversary of Nelson’s Dockyard and Antigua and Barbuda’s debut as the host of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s (CHTA) Caribbean Travel Marketplace from 18-22MAY 2025.

The ABTA unveiled a revamped version of its official website, www.visitantiguabarbuda.com.

Digital Media Manager at the Tourism Authority Sharifa George said, “The new website is modern, cutting-edge, functional, and meets the needs of all stakeholders. It offers data capture, allowing for a more targeted digital marketing approach and a user-friendly interface for all stakeholders.”
