UNESCO: Venice in Peril if Doesn't Ban Cruise Ships

The UN said it would consider a proposal to place Venice on its endangered list at its plenary session in JUN. If approved, it would demand urgent action by the Italian government by FEB 2022. There have long been calls to ban cruise ships from the city due to their impact on the local ecosystem and the historic buildings located there. A cruise ship ban appeared to have been passed earlier in 2021, but the ships have returned to Venice regardless as authorities have not appeared able to enforce the ban, and new arrangements for cruise ships are not yet available.
