Amsterdam is trying to curb party tourism in order to improve the quality of life for residents and attract more mindful visitors, according to Skift. In particular, the city is looking to lower the appeal of its Red Light District, De Wallen. The area is known for drinking, cannabis stores, brothels and other recreational activities.
By mid-May, smoking cannabis in public will be banned, and bars, restaurants, and brothels will have to close earlier. The city plans to replace a lot of the brothel windows in De Wallen with a large adult entertainment facility in another part of the city.
The moves are part of a larger plan to balance tourism in the city. City council is considering capping the number of visitors at 20 million annually, slightly higher than the 18 million visitors it received in 2019. Around 25 per cent of visitors partake in party activities in the city, and 17 per cent visit De Wallen.
