SK. Government Subsidy for WestJet Direct Service to U.S. Criticized

As Open Jaw reported when it was announced that WestJet would launch direct flights between Saskatoon and Minneapolis, the route is being guaranteed by the province, which has seen large chunks of air service cut in recent weeks and months.

The provincial government is providing a minimum revenue guarantee of up to $2.2 million over the next 3 years as what it calls an “insurance policy” for the continuation of the service.

As CBC reports, critics of the funding say taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook due to “transferring risk from a multi-billion dollar corporation to the Saskatchewan government" and SK instead should press Ottawa to change regulations and fees airlines and airports pay to make aviation financially sustainable.
