WestJet will be suspending direct flights from YHZ to three destinations: YUL, YOW and YYT, according to reports. YHZ to YUL flights will be suspended 28OCT, while flights from YHZ to YOW and YYT will be suspended in early JAN 2023.
"We understand that this is disappointing news and we apologize for any disruption this caused our guests and communities," John Weatherill, WestJet's chief commercial officer said in an email to CBC.
"As a national airline we will continue to engage with these communities and stakeholders as we look to enhance service to Eastern and Atlantic Canada through direct connections to Western Canada, a leisure destination.
"By making these difficult decisions now, it will ensure we can offer more of what our guests expect from WestJet and solidify our airline as the most reliable and affordable airline for many years to come."
WestJet didn't say whether the suspended routes will be re-introduced in spring 2023.
According to CBC, the airline's non-stop services from YHZ to YYC, YEG and YYZ will continue this winter. WestJet will also continue to offer flights to MCO and CUN.
The service suspensions follow previous cuts WestJet made in Atlantic Canada as part of its new strategic direction to focus its attention in Western Canada. Previously announced cuts included winter service to Charlottetown, PEI, Fredericton, NB, Sydney, NS, and Quebec City suspended as of 15NOV.
