YYZ Worst Airport in the World for Delays This Summer

Toronto Pearson International Airport ranked as the worst airport in the world for delays and number 4 for flight cancellations. According to data from flight tracking sight FlightAware, 52.5 per cent of the airport's scheduled flights between 26MAY and 19JUL were delayed, and 6.5 per cent were cancelled during that period.

While YYZ sits at the top of rankings, it is joined by seven European airports on the top 10 list, as well as one from Australia and one from the U.S.

YYZ recently launched an education campaign on 13JUL with two infographics designed to help passengers become part of the solution to wait times at the airport. Infographics included “A better trip through Pearson,” which walks passengers through Pearson airport and provided simple tips and tricks to help smooth journeys, as well as “Solving for congestion at Pearson,” which walks through the steps airport partners and government stakeholders have taken to improve passenger flow through Pearson, and what’s next as industry works to smooth the process of flying into and out of Pearson.

In addition, Air Canada introduced a flexible policy 19JUL which specifically targeted YYZ "due to longer than usual delays." The policy allows fee-free ticket changes (subject to availability) either to let pax switch flights to YTZ or to extend connection times at YYZ.

Airports with the Most Summer Cancellations Worldwide

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX ) in China is the world's number 1 for flight cancellations this summer, with nearly 8 per cent of flights cancelled, according to FlightAware data.

While Europe dominated the global list for delays, only one European airport appears in the top 10 for cancellations. On the list of worst airports globally for cancellations, YYZ placed fourth behind SZX and two U.S. airports.
