Flying in Canada Expensive Largely Due to Sky-High Airport Fees

According to WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech, Canada’s airport fees are “ far, far, far more expensive than any other country.” This came as a surprise to von Hoensbroech, given the country’s “reliance on air travel.” As of 01JAN 2023, YYZ plans for a CAD $5 increase to its airport usage fee, raising the amount each departing passenger pays to $40 plus tax. As reported by the Globe and Mail, the standard U.S. airport fee is USD $4.50. A spokesperson from Air Canada said that airport fees and taxes add to airfares, “creating a disincentive to fly.” Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), which runs YYZ, said the hike in fees was the first in more than a decade and was made to keep up with payments. They added that U.S. airports also received “40 times” more in government funding compared to Canadian airports.
