Who Will Be the Likely Winners & Losers in Post-Pandemic Luxury Cruising?

With the number of cruises rebounding “sharply,” Travel Research Online names the projected “winners and losers” as some cruise destinations face an uncertain future and some cruise lines contend with debt.

Russia is said to be the “greatest loser” as the report predicts cruise destinations in the country may not recover for “generations.” Other “losers” include China, where travellers may be wary of conflict, and Mexico’s West Coast, where gang violence has reportedly caused cruise lines to curtail their port visits.

Destination winners include more remote ports in Iceland, Canada, Alaska, Scotland, Ireland, and Norway. Travel Research Online predicts “mass-market resort ships” to be probable losers in post-pandemic cruising, under pressure to sail with a full complement of thousands of guests while avoiding sharp discounting. On the other hand, luxury expedition ships seem to be the “hottest category,” according to the report.
