WestJet Pilots Union Authorizes Strike Vote

Simple Flying reports that WestJet’s pilots’ association is asking members to vote to authorize a strike. Following the government’s approval of the acquisition of Sunwing by WestJet, pilots are especially concerned about “having three airlines with three different labor contracts:” WestJet, Swoop, and Sunwing’s.

Earlier this year, the union asked Ottawa to intervene to mediate a resolution to prolonged contract negotiations with the airline.

The clock is ticking as the mandated mediation and cooling-off periods expire on MAY 22, making the Victoria Day weekend the earliest date possible for job action or a lockout, and Canadian law requires union members to vote to call a strike within 60 days of any such call: 22MAR.
