The Canadian air industry landscape continues to be transformed as, effective 16JAN, Air Canada no longer flies between Calgary and Saskatchewan’s two major centres: Regina and Saskatoon. That move follows the announcement in 2021 by competitor WestJet that it was doubling down on its Western Canada focus and especially on its Calgary hub.
At least one local air analyst is shocked. "I'm surprised that Air Canada would completely vacate the market largely to WestJet," Rick Erickson told CBC News. "I haven't seen this done before."
Two other airlines are taking up the slack. WestJet confirmed to CBC that it will add new daily flights on both routes beginning 16FEB. And Flair Airlines had already announced its new daily direct service YYC - YXE would begin 09MAY.
