'We Don't Have Enough Pilots:' Airlines Go All Out to Staff Up After Deep Pandemic Job Cuts Come Back to Bite Them

American carriers are rushing to ramp up staffing for the holidays to prevent travel cancellations similar to those in summer 2021. After reducing staff numbers during the pandemic, the industry is grappling with shortages of pilots, flight attendants and customer service agents. Carriers are offering higher wages and increased bonuses for new staff, but headcounts are still down 14.3 per cent in OCT 2021 compared to pre-pandemic. Industry experts attribute the slow recovery rate to fading attraction of jobs in passenger airlines, with relatively low wages.
