Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is promising to do more to fix ‘unacceptable’ passport delays as offices have been overwhelmed with Canadians who need their documents before travel. The CBC reports wait times exceeding five hours at many passport offices as of 22JUN.
In an interview with CBC, Trudeau said that the government will “step up” to address the situation, saying they are “working night and day” to get Canadians their passports.
He revealed Ottawa is prepared to hire more workers on top of the 600 hired in JAN to deal with the backlog. The federal government has also launched an online tool that shows the estimated wait time for an agent to process a standard, “urgent,” or “express” passport application.
