SAS CEO: European Airlines Desperately Need Consolidation

Anko van der Werff, CEO of SAS Scandinavian Airlines, pushed for the consolidation of European airlines in an interview with Skift. As governments supported airlines financially throughout the pandemic, there came restrictions on mergers and acquisitions between airlines, which Van der Werff says pushed back consolidations in Europe.

While Van der Werff says SAS is not in a position to drive consolidation right now, he says “what needs to happen in Europe is consolidation.” Van der Werff pointed to the U.S.’ airline sector as a “template” for what the airline industry would look like - saying airline groups have been profitable under more consolidation.
