The Canadian government said protecting jobs and preserving the long-term viability of Air Transat is of utmost importance, after Air Canada and the tour operator terminated a planned merger in the face of European regulatory resistance. Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said in a statement he had spoken with Transat and the two sides were "examining next steps." Quebec Economy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon said the provincial government "will not leave Transat without support."
