The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the European Travel Commission (ETC) are warning that the European region’s travel & tourism sector could be at risk if almost 1.2 million jobs remain unfilled across the EU. In 2020, the sector lost almost 1.7 million jobs due to the pandemic.
While travel and tourism in the EU is recovering, the WTTC says current labour shortages may delay recovery and put additional pressure on the sector. It adds that “a serious number” of vacancies will likely remain unfilled during the summer. Travel agencies are expected to be hit the hardest with a 30 per cent shortage of workers. Air transport and accommodation segments are expected to suffer from 21 and 22 per cent shortages in staff, respectively.
