More Than 90% of Great Barrier Reef Bleached this Year

91 per cent of Great Barrier Reef coral observed in 2022 was bleached, according to Australian government scientists, marking it as the fourth mass bleach event in seven years, reports CBC. Bleaching, which refers to when coral turns white to “spit” poisonous algae out of their systems, is typically caused by global warming, but scientists say this year’s event occurred during a “La Niña” weather pattern, typically associated with cooler temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Authority, hopes most of the coral will recover from the current event. “The early indications are that the mortality [of the coral] won’t be very high,” Wachenfeld said.
