More Cruise Lines Likely to be Forced to Limit Capacity, Close Restaurants Due to Staff Shortages

Two Carnival Corp. brands have announced cuts in service they say are a result of crew shortages, and The Points Guy says the cruise lines’ recent moves are an example of a broader industry staffing issue that could impact “many cruise ships this spring and summer.”

Cunard recently capped passenger capacity on an undisclosed number of Alaska and Europe itineraries into early JUL, as some crew members have either been delayed or prevented from reaching their designated vessels due to COVID-19-related flight issues.

Meanwhile, Carnival Cruise Line announced on 16MAY it will temporarily close two restaurants across its fleet due to “difficulty procuring crew visas.”

The Points Guy notes that if staffing issues continue into the summer, passengers may see “more capacity reduction, additional onboard venue closures or even completely canceled cruises,” among other issues such as longer lines, increased wait times, and an overall reduction in service levels across many cruise brands.
