It’s Not Just Paris: Tourist Quotas Come To French Countryside to Combat Overtourism

France’s national parks and countryside towns are implementing new systems designed to combat overtourism this summer, including daily quotas. According to Skift, visitors flocked to the country’s rural towns and parks over the pandemic, which resulted in overcrowding and some environmental damage.

Beginning in JUL, France’s Lavezzi Islands, Restonica Valley and Bavella Needles will all have visitor quotas, with tourists required to make reservation in advance, and French residents given priority.

Calanques, south of Marseilles, will limit park visitors to 500 per day instead of 3,000.

Normandy Tourism says it is working with operators from Paris to get tourists to come to the region outside of peak seasons and or to travel to other areas in an effort to avoid overtourism at smaller towns and nature sites.
