Flight disruptions are likely to continue in Europe due an air traffic controller strike in France, the Financial Times is reporting. Air traffic control unions are among the many unions to strike in protest of the French government’s pension reforms.
An air traffic controller strike affects flights going over French airspace, even if the plane is not planning to land in the country. This would especially affect aircraft flying from the U.K. which often have to fly over France to get to the rest of the continent. Additionally, the nature of the French protests means airlines can get very little warning ahead of a strike and face serious challenges in making adjustments.
The French strikes are one of several issues impacting European air travel. Transportation has been disrupted by strikes in Germany and the U.K. as well, including a planned 10-day walkout at LHR set to begin 31MAR and last through most of Easter. European airspace is already congested because of flight route changes resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war and increased traffic as travel rebounds from the pandemic.
