Disrespectful Tourist Who Climbed Mexican Monument Mobbed by Angry Crowd

A tourist was mobbed by onlookers after she was accused of disrespecting Mayan culture by climbing the step-pyramid in the centre of Chichen Itza in Yucatán, Mexico.

Once the woman made it to the top of the pyramid, she took her hat off and started to dance, prompting a crowd of onlookers standing at the base of the monument to boo.

The tourist was reportedly escorted away by security after descending the steps, where she was heckled and jeered by the crowd at the historic site, whic also reportedly threw water bottles and pulled her hair, The Independent reports.

“Imagine if someone climbed up on the altar in a cathedral and did a rude dance - this pyramid is sacred and that’s what she did.” said one response to a viral video of the incident.
Visitors have been banned from climbing the pyramid at Chichen Itza since 2006.

Visitors who break the rule can face fines up to approximately USD$5,115.
