A dispute among whether American customs agents can carry guns on Canadian soil, among other legal protections disputes, has kept Nexus enrolment centres closed in Canada for more than three months after they reopened in the U.S., reports CTV News.
The legal standoff has led to a backlog in Nexus applications, growing from around 270,000 in APR 2022 to 341,688 in JUL, says the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). Canada and the U.S. remain in discussions on when the 13 Canadian centres will open as both sides attempt to clarify “legal protections” for American customs officers when working at the centres. “One example could include the authority to carry or have access to a firearm while on duty,” said a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman.
