Aid for WestJet, Other Airlines in the Offing: Analysts

Calling the Air Canada deal a “catalyst” for more federal aid for airlines, AirTrav President Robert Kokonis told Bloomberg more deals are likely to be struck in the next four months. Analysts say a federal aid package for WestJet is imminent, though exactly what form that assistance will take remains to be seen. WestJet is privately held, owned by Toronto-based Onex Corp., making any type of federal ownership stake -- as was seen in the government's deal with Air Canada -- highly problematic. Kokonis said some form of support is forthcoming for Transat, as well. He explained airline aid is not a one-size fits all solution, as carriers’ capital structures are different depending on how they finance aircraft and scope of operations.
