Next Beach Stop, North Korea! Kim Jong Un Builds Massive Resort

Kim’s Coastal Vision: North Korea's Tourism Transformation

North Korea isn't exactly the first place that springs to mind when planning a beach holiday, but Kim Jong Un is on a mission to change that. In a bold move to open up the reclusive nation, Kim recently unveiled the Wonsan Kalma beach resort, a massive tourism project on the country's east coast. The aim? To put North Korea on the map as a cultural tourism destination.

A Grand Opening

The opening ceremony of the Wonsan Kalma resort was nothing short of grand, attended by Russia's ambassador to Pyongyang as the chief guest. With much "splendor" and "great satisfaction" expressed by Kim, the event marked a significant step in the country's ambitious tourism goals.

What’s on Offer?

Nestled in the port city of Wonsan, this vast complex is prepared to welcome nearly 20,000 guests with a range of accommodations, including hotels and hostels. Beach, sun and sea await along with sports, and other recreational activities.

Tourism: A Strategic Move

In light of stringent UN sanctions limiting North Korea's economic activities, tourism is an avenue for earning foreign currency.

And the Kalma resort is just the beginning. Kim hinted at a forthcoming major plan to develop additional tourist hubs, aiming to elevate North Korea's status as a "world-level tourist cultural resort."

The project wasn't without its hurdles. Announced back in 2014, construction began in 2018 with hopes of wrapping up by 2019. However, the global pandemic and material supply issues threw a wrench in the timeline, pushing back the project's completion.

No word yet on whether Sandals or Riu plan to build North Korean all-inclusive properties. Riu Grand Wansan Kalma Resort and Spa?
