Stormy weather across the central and eastern U.S. has caused the cancellation of more than 400 flights, many out of Charlotte and Washington Reagan airports.
USA Today reports a “colossal, deadly winter storm” was barreling towards the East Coast of the U.S. on 05MAR after tearing acoss the central U.S., unleashing a barrage of dangerous weather disruptions from hurricane-force winds to blizzard conditions.
As of 10:30 a.m. ET on 05MAR, Flight Aware was reporting 438 cancelled flights in and out CLT (170 cancellations), DCA (108), DFW (102) and 48 MCI/Kansas City. More than 600 flights were cancelled at DFW on 04MAR.
WBTV states the majority of flight changes at CLT involve PSA Airlines flights -- a subsidiary of American Airlines, for which Charlotte Douglas is a hub.
The storm impacts have been felt from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes and Atlantic Coast as whiteout conditions forced people off the roads in the High Plains and wildfires broke out amid bone-dry conditions in South Texas, USA Today said. More than 400,000 homes and businesses were without power from Texas to North Carolina.
CNN said the “near-record strong March storm” reached the East Coast early on o5MAR after delivering deadly thunderstorms and whipping up choking dust and fast-spreading wildfires in the central and southern US Tuesday.
