B.C. Resort Reps in Toronto Talking Up Ski Season

BC ski resort media reps gathered recently in Toronto.

Stunning scenery, world-class resorts, and some of the world’s best powder skiing.

Destination British Columbia brought a team of ski resort representatives into Toronto recently to talk up a winter season that’s about to kick into high gear. Officials from the biggest names in BC skiing, including Whistler, Big White and Revelstoke, were on hand to talk about everything from new ski lifts and snowmobile tours to new terrain parks and food options. Here’s a rundown.

This is a Canadian legend, both an international sports mecca that hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, and a funky, fun mountain town. It’s famous for its side-by-side mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb.

Whistler Scandinave Spa
It features more than 200 marked ski runs, 3,307 hectares (8,171 acres) of terrain, 16 alpine bowls, and three glaciers. On average, the resort receives more than 10.8 meters (35.5 feet) of snow per year and boasts one of the longest ski seasons in North America.
Yes, the world’s best skiers came here in 2010, but even novice skiers, including yours truly, can enjoy easy and slightly challenging runs.
The Luge World Championships will be held in Whistler from 06FEB to 08FEB next year, to be followed shortly thereafter by The Invictus Games. For the first time, the games will feature winter adaptive sports when it comes to Whistler and Vancouver from 08FEB to 16FEB, including Alpine Skiing, Alpine Snowboarding, Biathlon, Nordic Skiing, Skeleton and Wheelchair Curling.
The current high-speed quad Jersey Cream Chair on Blackcomb Mountain is being replaced this summer with a new high-speed six-pack. The upgrade is expected to increase uphill capacity by 29 per cent, also reducing lift-line wait times and improving circulation in Blackcomb's high-traffic mid-mountain area.
All managed from the My Epic app, a brand-new gear membership provides all the benefits of owning gear, but with more choice, lower cost, and no hassle. The memberships are available for both adults and children, and unlock access to over 60 ski and snowboard models and the convenience to choose in-resort delivery and daily slopeside pick-up & drop-off at Whistler Blackcomb and 11 other North American resorts.
The Scandinave Spa is a great place to relax after a tough day on the mountain, with a variety of heated pools and saunas in a woodsy setting.
Whistler also is home to top resorts, including the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, the Westin Resort and Spa and the Four Seasons Resort and Residences. Whistler Travel Media Manager Tania Sear told Open Jaw that the Hilton Whistler Resort and Spa recently had its lobby and bar area renovated
It’s an important place for the arts, as well. The Squamish-Lilwat Cultural Centre is a magnificent facility that tells about the rich history of the local indigenous peoples, while the equally beautiful Audain Art Museum has some of the finest art displays in Canada.
Located less than an hour from Kelowna, Big White Ski Resort is a favourite family-friendly destination that boasts Canada’s largest ski-in/ski-out resort village. The average snowfall is 7.5 meters (25 feet), so you won’t have to worry about bare patches.
Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy 119 designated runs, serviced by 16 lifts, for a total of 2,765 acres of skiable terrain – not to mention 25 kilometers (16 miles) of combined Nordic and wilderness trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing
The Big White Kids’ Centre has been redesigned as an ever cozier place for children to rest, play and learn. The resort also has upgraded its Bullet Chair and has a new grooming machine.
For the upcoming winter, Alaska Air has added direct flights connecting LAX and SEA to Kelowna (YLW), and WestJet connecting YYZ with YLW. In celebration of the expanded air service, travellers who book a 5-night ski package with Big White Central Reservations can enjoy free skiing or snowboarding on the day of their arrival, saving up to $239 during peak season to kick off their vacation upon arrival.
