Canada has been named the seventh best country for LGBTQ+ travel, according a new report released by MyDatingAdviser.com.

The Best Countries for LGBTQ+ Travel in 2023 underscores the varying degrees of acceptance and support for the LGBTQ+ community across different countries, regions, and economic landscapes. Canada was been given an LGBTQ+ travel index score of 95.5 (out of a possible 100 points).

There have been significant changes in laws and norms surrounding the issue of same-sex marriage and the rights of LGBT people around the world. However, public opinion on accepting homosexuality in society remains divided by country, region, and economic development.

Canada's position as the seventh-best LGBTQ+ travel destination is attributed to a multitude of factors. Notably, the country boasts an  85 per cent public acceptance rate towards homosexuality, as revealed by Pew Research's "Global Attitudes & Trends" survey. Canada has also been at the forefront of championing LGBTQ+ rights, having legalized sexual activity for same-sex couples as early as 1969.

Moreover, the nation has made significant strides in enacting legislation that safeguards the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. Canada recognized domestic partnerships in some provinces and territories since 2003 and nationwide since 2005. Adoption rights were extended to LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, beginning at the provincial and territorial level in 1996, and achieving nationwide recognition in 2011.

Furthermore, Canada has been a trailblazer in protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals within the armed forces. Since 1992, military service has been open to all, including transgender people. Anti-discrimination laws across the country ban any form of anti-gay discrimination, and attempts to pathologize or treat sexual orientation by mental health professionals have been illegal in several provinces since 2015.

Canada has also made significant strides in recognizing and protecting gender identity. Since 2017, transgender individuals have been able to change their gender and name without requiring medical intervention, and human rights protections explicitly include gender identity or expression across the entire nation.
