New Strikes to Paralyze German Airports 26, 27MAR

FRA

German unions are calling for another transport strike which would see thousands of workers walk off the job and disrupt trains, planes, and local transit, the AP is reporting.

FRA, the busiest airport in Germany, said that its operations will be "heavily disrupted" and is advising against travel to the airport 27MAR. The second-busiest airport, MUC, said it is facing two days of strike action and both cargo and passenger flights will be cancelled 26 and 27MAR.

One of the unions has been calling for increased pay raises for some time and has already staged several one-day walkouts at airports and on local transit services.

German train operator Deutsche Bahn says that no long-distance trains will operate on 27MAR, and many local trains will be disrupted as well. It is encouraging passengers to find alternative transportation.

According to Euronews, the two unions involved in the labour action do not have a large presence in Hamburg and Bremen, so operations are less likely to be affected in those cities.

The effect of the strike could last into 28MAR, and many operators have already cancelled service for that day.

Travellers from North America are advised to check with their airline if they are headed to a German destination.
