Fuel Costs Keeping Canadians Home This Canada Day Weekend: Poll

Canada Flag Mountains TravelAccording to a new poll from CheapOAir.ca, more Canadians are planning on celebrating Canada Day from home instead of travelling. The survey, which asked Canadians how they planned to spend the holiday, found that the high cost of fuel has limited travellers' options.

“As we prepare to celebrate Canada’s 155th birthday, we wanted to get a pulse of what people were feeling towards their travel plans to mark the occasion,” said Daniel Hayter, Senior Product Manager for CheapOair.ca. “It’s evident that the rising costs in fuel will keep families closer to home.”

The Canada Day Survey found that a majority of Canadians (52 per cent) stated that they would be staying home for Canada Day, and roughly 27 per cent said that they would only drive a "short distance." Of note, over 70 per cent of respondents stated that the record high gas prices have affected their Canada Day plans.

The survey also asked respondents what was the most iconic way to celebrate Canada Day. 44 per cent of Canadians said enjoying a BBQ, followed by 22 per cent who preferred watching fireworks and then camping (18.5 per cent) and water sports (14.9 per cent).

The survey also asked Canadians - what is the most quintessentially Canadian thing to do on Canada Day? The majority (53.9 per cent) said BBQ’ing, followed by decorating their home with Canadian Flags (28 per cent), jumping in a pool (10 per cent), and lastly, eating poutine (8.2 per cent).

Findings were reported from a study conducted by CheapOair.ca over one week from 8-15JUN 2022, with results determined automatically through a third-party tracking system. In a press release, CheapOair.ca did not indicate how many Canadians were polled.
