Sunwing Pulls Out of 26 Cuba Resorts; Shifts to Other Caribbean Locales

Sunwing
With Cuba beset by recent power grid issues, Sunwing says it has removed 26 island hotels and resorts from its lineup and is promoting other Caribbean holiday spots.
But the vacation provider says it remains “very committed” to Cuba as a winter destination.
A series of late-season storms caused a series of temporary power outages in Cuba, leading to complaints from travellers.
“For Cuba specifically, I can confirm 26 hotels have been removed from our product lineup, and lots of work is being done to ensure transparency for travel advisors on Cuba resorts and the experience customers can expect in destination,” Sunwing spokesperson Melanie Filipp told Open Jaw.
“Sunwing remains very committed to Cuba for this winter season and beyond, and has done some work recently to ensure that customers are getting the best possible experience this winter, and to ensure we're assisting advisors and clients in transparency (e.g. setting certain property standards and removing some resorts in our product lineup that may not be in line with those standards, etc.).”
Filipp said Sunwing is instead promoting “hidden gems” in other areas of the Caribbean.
“These are destinations that are perhaps less frequented than some of the more popular, busier tourist destinations, but offer incredible value (and oftentimes less busy than the more popular hotspots),” she said.
Among the alternative spots Sunwing is recommending are resorts in Roatan, Panama, La Romana, and San Andres, Colombia.
